About the company

Dr. D'Andrea Ngong is the visionary founder behind Queens Gettin Lit! (QGL!), a literacy-based after-school program aimed at empowering young Black schoolgirls from third to fifth grade. More than just a curriculum, QGL! is a safe space for these girls to explore their cultural heritage, embrace their identity, and develop a love for reading—all through literature inspired by Black history, culture, and the powerful women who came before them. Dr. Ngong founded QGL! with the goal of nurturing confidence, curiosity, and the belief that every young girl can be a queen.

Challenge

Launching QGL! wasn't without its hurdles. Initially, Dr. Ngong found it difficult to gain traction and secure a stable location for the program, which meant opportunities were limited. Additionally, building a curriculum that could resonate deeply while meeting educational standards was a daunting task, one that demanded both a deep understanding of the needs of Black girls and relentless dedication. She faced countless setbacks, but Dr. Ngong was driven by her passion to make an impact on young girls who often lacked representation in their education.

Result

Today, Queens Gettin Lit! is making a profound impact at its current school site in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Under Dr. Ngong’s guidance, QGL! is helping girls explore their roots, build confidence, and imagine their future possibilities. Through meaningful discussions, positive peer interactions, and literature that speaks directly to their experiences, Dr. Ngong is sparking a love of learning and a sense of identity. The program is now a cherished part of the school and the community, giving these young girls the tools to see themselves as powerful, capable leaders of tomorrow
